Timber frame homes. Timber frame homes are not for everyone, some people prefer the clean sharp lines of roman and contemporary architecture, but for those who seek the rich warm feeling of earth born construction the timber frame brings centuries of human social being into your home.
Timber frame buildings have served man for centuries.
Modern timber frame homes are the best in strength and heat retention.
Timber frame homes are living furniture.
In your timber frame home one is constantly interacting with the building itself. Watching the movement of the beams which leads the eye, from one connection to another, giving a strong secure feeling, and warm look of soft wood.
Timber frame construction is sometimes called post and beam construction. True timber frame construction is composed of connecting joinery, mortise and tenon, fastened by wooden peg that are drilled into the joinery to lock the structure in place.
"About Chisels" Slide Show Set of timber frame chisels.

Here is just a couple of pointers about chisels, and squares. Generally, the most important chisel for me, is the one and a half inch chisel. I cut most mortices with it. Some joiners use a two inch chisel for a two inch mortice and a one and a half inch chisel for a one and a half inch mortice. I simply like the feel of the one and a half inch chisel even while working a two inch mortice. That, being said. notice the two chisels, placed upon the framing square. These are a two inch and a one and a half inch chisels. notice that they exactly fit the demention of the square. Knowing that the square, corresponds with the size of the two chisels, allows you to use the square as a measuring gage, for the mortice you are cutting. Squares, they come in various shapes and sizes. You've got your frame-ming "square". the carpenters "square". the speed "square". three common squares, that can all be useful in timber frame construction. The framing square and the Speed , are mostly used for marking a full cut across a timber. perhaps your doing an end cut. The Speed square has notches for holding the point of a pencil so that dragging the pencil along the length of the mortise and then marking the ends can do mortise dimensioning. Now the Carpenters Square can have additional uses besides marking across the grain of the timber for an end cut. The Carpenters Square can be set as a depth gauge. With this, you can gauge the proper depth of your mortise. In addition measure the right angle of your cut, down the sidewall of the mortise, to determine over, or under cut, of the mortise pocket. Another configuration, of the Carpenters Square, is adding an additional draw guide to the rule of the square and adjusts the space between guides so as to measure the width of a tenon.

Frequently ask questions What kind of wood should I use? All types of wood can be use for your home, but for cost consideration one should consider locally available types. Although hardwoods are stronger and considered preferable, they are just that hardwood and are harder nature to cut verses wood like pine and Redwood and Douglas fir. The latter being extremely costly wherever one lives. My personal favorite is White pine, which is abundant here in New England. It is reasonable in cost and cuts very well and will serve as well as most other types of wood. I find Oak and Hemlock extremely difficult to cut and is prone to a good deal of large checking (drying cracks). Hemlock has a tendency to twist as well as checking and will sometimes dry twist even before one finishes the cutting making tenons difficult to fit to mortises. Can I use green wood for construction? Certainly. Green wood is preferable since green wood is softer and easier to cut. Shrinkage is negligible in a beams length and since building dimension is take from the outside edges shrinkage plays a minor role in overall construction. Do I need to buy dimensioned timbers? No, most timbers come from the mill a little over and may need planing, but all measurement for construction and joinery description is done from an assumed outside measurement. Where do I get timbers for my home? Best is find a local sawmill and make a deal with the sawyer to cut and truck your timber. Shipping is what drives the cost up, so if your using red would it would be worth the trip to California to make your deal with a supplier rather than through a lumber yard. Often Canadian Sawyers will make a deal with builder for specialty woods from up North. Remember your ordering a considerable amount of timber so its best to deal with source. How long does it take to build timber frame? Roughly speaking, for the average home about three months with a crew of three and a manager to plan and draw out the timbers. It usually take about a month to get the saw mill to fill your timber order, about a month to cut the frame, and about a month to put up the frame, install the stress skinn paneling and put a roof on the building this is all contingent on the fact that you are well planned and scheduled with any contractors you'll need. How can I calculate the cost of my timber frame? Start by applying a cost per joint. Count up the number of connecting joinery there is in the plan and multiply accordingly. A simple tenon mortise of good quality can take from twenty to thirty minutes to cut, some complex joinery can take a little longer. A joint or timber connection would comprise of a mortise and a tenon. Together both can take an hour to complete after they are draw out on the beam. Consider what it costs to hire a person to cut the mortise and tenons by the hour count out the number of joints in your construction and multiply by the hourly rate. Consider that each mortise, tenon or connection must be measured and draw out so that they can be cut. That time could take approximately ten minutes each, consider the time it takes to move and rotate each beam during that process. Consider fifteen minutes to draw out each unit. Take into consideration the time it takes to plane each beam with a six-inch planer, about 15minutes. Measure out and compile a millers list of all the timbers you'll need and the shop around for a sawmill that will cut your timbers and figure in trucking to your site. This step may take the miller a month to collect and mill your order. Consider the cost of tools, which you'll need for the project. I always buy a new power saw and a heavy duty half inch drill and a couple of mortising bits for each job because if your starting with old tools one of them will probably give up the ghost. How do I keep the wood from cracking? Put wood preservative/sealer on the timbers as soon as you finish cutting the joinery. Some timber framers paint hot wax on the end grain of the wood, this includes the insides of mortises, top and bottom of posts and tenons. What is the best preservative? WATCO oil An average house could use 10 gal. Of oil giving each beam two coats. Timber frame construction is accomplished by hard work.Timber frame homes are very warm and comfortable because the timber frame construction take into consideration the post and beams and the wood joinery. The carpentry tools used in building are chisels and saws. The plans that chet sinclair can supply are of fine quality. Timber framers guild is an organization for timber frame builders. Timberframe building starts with forestry. Timber framing can be an enjoyable passtime and timberframing your own home can help blood circulation.timberframes are made of wood. home building and home construction will create a post and beam building. home design varies with building style and historic home relocation can produce barn preservation as well as home design, architecture and log joint recycled timbers. timber frame building is the same as timber frame construction inside your workshopor within the Habitat for Humanity. timber frame structure such as barn architecture needs carpenter assistance as well as the knowledge of carpentry. business council is important to planning of insulated panelimplementation. Insulation instalation can be directed by architect, builder, or woodworker. Woodworking the joint can enhance the mortise or the tenon. Good joinery can trebuchet the craft.
